Course Information

At this stage, Level 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are offered. The plan is to add additional levels as the demand increases.  See here for more information.

Not at all. As a teacher, I absolutely love it when people come with no prior knowledge as then I get to do what I love best and teach.  I will take you through the very basics in both signing and culture and support you with any questions you may have.  There are no dumb questions and it is a safe place to learn, explore, and practice.  That being said, even if you do have significant prior knowledge, I am confident you will still get plenty out of even the Level 1 course as it is comprehensive, engaging, and lots of fun!

People learn Auslan for many reasons.  Some come and learn because they have a Deaf family member or friend or client with whom they wish to communicate; others learn Auslan as they anticipate needing it in their current or future vocation; others learn it because they want to be able to communicate on a basic level with Deaf people should they ever cross paths; and others learn simply because they have seen interpreters on TV during the Covid press releases and are interested, would like to know more, and think it may be fun to learn another language.  I will explore opportunities for you to connect with your local Deaf community should you be interested, and once you have the basics, I will have a variety of other Deaf people visit our classes for you to practice your newfound skills.

I initially wrote the course with university-age students in mind, however I have continually adapted it to meet the needs of my community students and their varying ages and stages of life, neurodiversity, and varying levels of prior education. The courses are therefore aimed at anyone between the ages of 15 and 101, however it may be suitable for younger learners at the discretion of parents (considering the length of the class; the times the classes are offered; and the student’s capacity to focus in an online learning environment).     

In most classes, we look at 7 key areas:

    1. Close-up on Culture – where we explore a key component of Deaf culture,
    2. Focus on Fingerspelling – where we look at the manual alphabet and on improving receptive and expressive skills,
    3. Navigating Numbers – where you will learn not only numbers in Auslan but incorporating them into everyday life, measurements, basic maths, timelines, etc,
    4. Vital Vocab – where we cover different topics and learn vocab essential to that category/topic,
    5. Grammar Guidance – where we explore the grammar and syntax of Auslan and how to put the vocab you are learning into sentences, storytelling, and conversation,
    6. Put it into Practice – where there is opportunity to practice conversation, role play, ask questions and answers, or apply your learning to your specific area of interest or vocation, and
    7. Rewarding Revision – where we play games and activities to revise vocab that has been covered in previous weeks. The winner of these activities has the chance to add free private Auslan tuition minutes to their ongoing tally.

Each class goes for 1.5 hours and although the exact timing of each segment varies depending on the content to be covered that week.  We generally spend:

  1. the first 15 minutes playing a game or doing some kind of activity to review the previous week’s content,
  2. about 5 – 10 minutes learning the alphabet or improving your expressive and receptive skills (especially in the first 2 or 3 levels),
  3. roughly 5 or 10 minutes looking at numbers and incorporating them into Auslan,
  4. approximately 10 to 20 minutes looking at an aspect of Deaf culture and community,
  5. around 10 to 20 minutes devoted to understanding the various components of Auslan grammar and how to put the vocab you are learning into sentences and conversation,
  6. roughly 10 to 15 minutes teaching you new vocab, and
  7. the remainder of the class time engaging in additional activities and games to assist with your retention of signs or an aspect of grammar that we have focused on; practicing your conversations through directed activities; or consolidating that which you’ve learned thus far in creative ways.

For the more advanced levels, the segments relating to fingerspelling, numbers, and culture shift to spending more time on aspects of storytelling, English-Auslan/Auslan-English translation, incorporating the various elements of grammar into more complex activities, and opportunities to share homework tasks.

Classes are capped at 10 students to ensure plenty of opportunity for individual feedback, support, encouragement, and correction of articulation of signs. Keeping online class small also enables maximum engagement and participation and is associated with greater learning outcomes.

That’s totally ok! I don’t expect you will retain everything automatically.  So, to support your learning, the following is available to you:

    1. You will have access each week to handouts that look at what we have covered that week in relation to culture and grammar, as well as a handout for the following week’s vocab that you can print and take notes on during class. You will also receive a weekly summary that lists everything we have done during that class.
    2. Throughout the class, there are numerous games and activities to help you revise and consolidate your learning.
    3. I always endeavour to open the classroom 10 to 15 minutes prior to your class start time or stick around for 10 to 15 minutes afterwards, so you can jump online early or stay a bit later to ask any questions you may have.
    4. The classes are recorded and uploaded to the server so you are able to access and review them at your leisure.
    5. There will be a private Facebook group for students, where you are able to organise practice sessions with each other, online or in person. I will also post things in there from time to time for you to practice between classes.  You can also post any questions you have in the group.
    6. I will give you some online resources and show you how to navigate them to support your learning.
    7. I will give you some tips and tricks on ways you might incorporate revision day to day without having to set specific time aside.
    8. If you can set aside 5 or 10 mins a day to revise, you will find yourself advancing splendidly!
    9. Throughout the course, you will have the chance to win free private Auslan tuition minutes, which you are then able to accrue and utilise with me at any point.
    10. I will help you explore ways you can increasingly engage in your local Deaf communities if you are keen.

The level to which you participate and engage is entirely up to you and it can vary week to week, or even moment to moment within the same class, and that’s okay!  Some people love playing games and doing activities and dive straight in.  Others may occasionally find it a little daunting or struggle with anxiety.  If this is the case, you are totally welcome to sit the activity out and watch, or even turn your camera off for a bit and interact through the chat function.  If you have trouble with fast-processing games, just let me know and I endeavour to adapt the activities to ensure the majority of them don’t require that on-the-spot quick thinking.  If you need a Rubik’s Cube or fidget toy to help you focus, go for it. If you need to take breaks, that’s totally ok…let me know and I’ll try work the class around them so you don’t miss out on the important bits.  If you are having a really rough week and just aren’t up to class, you are welcome to watch with the camera off, or you can watch the recording later once it’s uploaded to the server.  As much as possible, I will alter the class to ensure it’s accessible for all, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any specific needs.  I am always open to learning so feel free to teach me about what it is you need, how you best learn, and how I can support you to get the very best out of the course. 

I also want to gently reassure you that our classes are very safe and encouraging spaces.

I regularly have left-handed students in my classes, and I am always aware of this as I teach. I will often utilise terms such as ‘dominant’ and ‘non-dominant’ hand rather than ‘left’ and ‘right’, and will ensure that support is given to ensure left-handed students are able to consistently sign with their preferred hand.  There is also the option in the online classroom, to individually choose if you would like to mirror yourself and others.  This won’t impact the way others view you and each other, it is just activated for your own viewing.

  • You will receive a weekly handout with the vocab being covered so you can take notes to remind yourself of the signs and practice throughout the week.
  • The classes are recorded and uploaded to the server so you are able to access and review them at your leisure.

  • I will give you some online resources and show you how to navigate them to support your learning.

Life happens and I totally get it! Obviously you will gain the greatest benefit from being present in classes, as it’s interactive and I can give you individual feedback, but if you are unable to attend class for any reason, there are a couple of options.

    1. Option 1 – many of the levels have more than one scheduled class time. If you are unable to attend your class time but are available at the other class time that week, you are more than welcome to jump in on that one.  As much as possible, I encourage you to stick with your original timeslot as you will develop relationship with the other students and that contributes to a sense of safety and well-being, but if you do need to attend at a different timeslot one week, that is totally ok!
    2. Option 2 – all classes will be recorded and uploaded to the server, which you are able to access and review at a time that is convenient to you. If possible, I encourage you to view it prior to the next class, as often we build upon the prior week’s knowledge.
    3. Option 3 – If you feel you would benefit from a private lesson to support your learning, you can contact me for a one-off session at a discounted rate.
  • There are no official assessments at any point for any of the levels, and no specific homework in Level 1. However, learning a language, particularly when not experiencing immersion, requires regular practise.  I know you are all busy, but if you can take 10 mins a day to go through the vocab list, alphabet, and numbers you have learned, you will really make the most of these short courses and find yourself progressing well.
  • From Level 2 onwards, you will have opportunity to put some of the skills you are learning into practice by signing a short story or giving instructions for a game or activity etc. We will look at these activities during class and I will guide you through them, and then over subsequent weeks, you will be invited to have a go doing it independently.  This is of course optional, but I encourage you to take these opportunities as you will receive valuable feedback and encouragement, building your confidence and competency.
  • Some people however, have been asking for homework and would love more opportunity to do so, so if you fall into that category, let me know and I’m more than happy to create some for you 😊 Also check out the private Facebook group for midweek tasks and challenges!
  • Upon successful completion of each level, you will receive a digital certificate. If you would like a printed certificate mailed to you, let me know and I can certainly arrange that.
  • Successful completion of the level is based on participation and presence. Each course is comprised of 9 classes, and you must have completed at least 8 of those to qualify.  You must have been present online for at least 3 of those classes, while the remaining ones may be viewed via the recording.

Sign With Sarah is not an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) so you will not receive formal qualifications as you would at a TAFE. All Sign With Sarah courses are categorised under community courses, and thus your certificate is recognised as such.  Should you wish to gain formal qualification through the VET system, I will assist and direct you to the relevant institutions in your state.

Yes.  Additional levels will be offered as those progressing through them continue and as the demand for them increases.

  • The majority of other online courses provide a pre-recorded, non-interactive video for you to watch that provides the instruction. You are then required to practise completely independently, while some may provide additional workshops for you to participate in for practice and feedback.  All Sign With Sarah classes are taught live and designed for maximum engagement, interaction, and individual feedback.  Your classes will also be recorded for post viewing and revision, AND you will also have access to an online community to practice between classes.
  • Face to face classes are absolutely wonderful and I greatly encourage these, however, due to people’s schedules, the current covid climate and conditions, personal circumstances, and geographic location, these are not always possible. When required to transition to online learning in April 2020, I spent considerable time contemplating how to ensure virtual classes were as effective as possible, and then adapting the curriculum, teaching methods, and class activities accordingly.  The transition went exceedingly well, and I was successful in implementing the new online courses, ensuring maximum engagement and interaction.  It rapidly became my preferred method of teaching as it has allowed me to increase the number of classes on offer and extend them to the broader community. As students, you are able to access class even when in lockdown or quarantine, and should you find yourself unable to attend a class, it will be recorded and uploaded to the server so you can access it and catch up prior to the next class.

Enrolment Options

That’s fabulous that you’ve already learnt the alphabet! It’s a great foundation, however the alphabet is only a very small aspect of Auslan, and you will not only learn the alphabet, numbers, and signs in Level 1, but pertinent information about Deaf culture and community.  So Level 1 is perfectly suited for you!

Absolutely not! As you may or may not be aware, there is some variation in some signs between the different states, particularly between the northern and southern states of Australia.  We discuss and address this in the very first class, and from there on in, I endeavour to demonstrate all variations that exist on any particular sign so you are aware of them, and then support you to articulate and utilise the sign that is relevant to your state of residence.  This is why one of the questions on your registration form asks in which state of Australia you are located.  It is not unlike the variation that exists in spoken languages between states, for example, the use of various words to describe swimwear – togs, cossies, bathers, swimmers, etc or to describe the mini sausages popular at children’s birthday parties – cheerios, mini frankfurts, cocktail frankfurts, lil boys, etc.  The only thing regarding states that you need to be aware of, is the timing of your classes with the various time zones and daylight savings.  I am located in Brisbane, QLD, so classes are generally scheduled according to my time zone.  When daylight savings impacts those in NSW and VIC, I will usually include their time in brackets beside my own, however for those in SA, WA, or NT will need to make mental adjustments as necessary.

Classes are generally offered each evening from 7.30pm once my children are in bed, however, as the demand for classes increase, additional classes may be scheduled on other days.  If you are unavailable at the allocated day/time, please do not hesitate to contact me to request a particular day or time, and should there be enough interest, I may proceed with adding an extra class at that time.

Absolutely! There are a few options available:

    1. If there are enough students to split the class into 2 separate classes, then I will endeavour to do so.
    2. If there are enough people on the waitlist that are all available at the same time, I will add an extra class.
    3. If you would like to wait until the following term, you are most welcome to, and I will let you know once registration becomes available.

Shoot me an email letting me know what days and times you are available, and what level you are keen to enrol in, and I will see if there is enough interest to establish an additional class. If you are keen to generate interest by inviting your friends, colleagues, or family and can get at least 3 of you keen and available at the same time, I will see what I can do to make it happen for you.

The course content is suitable for children, however it is targeted towards adults and may not be age-appropriate in the approaches to learning. Young children may find concentrating for a 1.5 hour online class quite challenging, and although classes are highly interactive and engaging, with lots of games and activities, there are periods of time where I may talk for 10 or 15 minutes around aspects of culture. I also move quite quickly through the content and younger children may have difficulty with their manual dexterity and require additional support.  Basically, I think the younger the child, the more bored they will be as the games and activities are confined to the screen and don’t involve gross motor movement or singing and other strategies that support young learners to remain engaged.  Younger teens may be old enough to participate and enjoy the course, but it would really depend on the individual and require parental discretion, considering the length of the class; the time of day at which the class is offered; and the student’s capacity to focus in an online learning environment.

Yes, all things are possible. There are numerous options including:

    1. Utilising the established Auslan Level 1 course but providing it specifically for your group at a day and time that is convenient. This is the most cost-effective option.
    2. Adapting the established Auslan Level 1 course for your specific workplace or organisational needs by focusing on signs that are relevant to your industry, and generating industry-specific scenarios for you to apply these to.
    3. Creating a new program in consultation that specifically addresses your goals for undertaking Auslan and/or Deaf awareness training.

Technology Requirements

  • It is recommended that you use a laptop or desktop computer as the screen size will enable you to adequately see the teacher, fellow students, and slides simultaneously. A tablet could be utilised but would require some kind of stand so you are hands-free and able to sign.  Phone screens are not large enough and aren’t recommended.  If you do not have access to a large enough screen, you could also sign in on 2 devices (e.g. a tablet and a phone) and have the slides up on one of them and the videos up on the other.
  • You will require a webcam, either inbuilt or an externally attached one.
  • It is recommended that you have a reliable and strong internet connection to avoid disruption to your participation and to minimise any lag.

Absolutely! Once you have registered, you will be sent comprehensive instructions on how to access and navigate the online classroom.  I also offer times where you are able to jump into the classroom prior to class to try work out any kinks before class begins.  I will support you as best I can to navigate the classroom, and if you are having any issues, just contact me and if I don’t know the answer, I will help source the answer for you.  As for during the actual class, I will support you to do whatever is required in the online classroom – usually it is just drawing on the whiteboard – but will also step you through that.

Providing you have access to the internet you will be able to sign immediately back in. The classroom doesn’t kick you out but remains open for the duration of the class.

Payments

  • Course fees are $270 if you choose to pay via a payment plan, which equates to $20/hr.
  • If you opt to pay upfront at point of registration, you will receive a $45 discount, and it will therefore only cost you $225, which equates to $16.66/hr.
  • If you register and pay before the early bird expiration, you will receive a $70 discount, bringing it down to just $200, which equates to $14.80/hr.
  • One off holiday refresher classes are charged at $20 per class.
  • Private tuition is available, starting at $45/hour.
  • Discounts are available for paying upfront ($45 discount) and for early bird registration ($70 discount).
  • At the moment, I am also running a special promotion where you will receive 20% off your course fees for each new student you sign up. Find 2 friends to sign up and you’ll receive 40% off your course.  Find 3 friends and receive 60% off.  Find 4 friends and receive 80% off.   Find 5 friends to sign up and your course will be free.  Those you refer must be new to Sign With Sarah and can enrol in any level course, i.e. they do not need to be enrolled in the same level and class as you.

Stripe is a PCI Service Provider Level 1, which is the highest and most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry. To put it simply, any payment information sent to Stripe is sent securely and safely.  All transactions are SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protected.

Courses

This policy is applicable to Sign With Sarah. Nothing in this policy or procedure limits the rights of individuals to take action under Australia’s Consumer Protection laws and the Australian Consumer Law and Fair-Trading Act 2012.

Consistent with the requirements of Australian Consumer Law and Fair-Trading Act 2012 the purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for granting refunds of enrolment fees, cancellation of enrolments, and transfer requests.

By enrolling in the course, the student agrees to pay the course fees using the payment method selected upon registration. The student is required to pay the full amount of the course fees even if they do not complete the course. If the student has applied for a payment plan when enrolling, the amount of the payment plan must be paid out in full regardless of whether they withdraw from the course prematurely as outlined in the following guidelines.

We take our student satisfaction very seriously and will do everything we can to ensure you are successful in your Auslan learning.  However, in the event that a refund is the agreed upon solution the following guidelines apply:

  1. Sign With Sarah will refund the full course fee if the course has been cancelled beyond the students control and the student elects not to reschedule or enrol in another course. An administration fee will not be charged.
  2. Students may request a refund for courses within 7 days from the course purchase date and/or prior to the first day of instruction. The course fee will be refunded, less the 10% Administration Fee.
  3. After the commencement of the course, Sign With Sarah will retain 100% of the course fees unless a medical certificate or evidence to the absolute satisfaction of Sign With Ssarah demonstrating extreme personal hardship is provided. An administration fee of 10% may be withheld from the refund. 
  4. Any request for refund which results in the forfeiture of all course fees, will result in the student being given the option of transferring to the next available course by paying the administration fee.
  5. Where a student’s refund request is granted, the applicable refund amount will be provided within (30) thirty days of receipt.
  6. We reserve the right to modify these policies on a case-by-case basis.

*The administration fee is equivalent to 10% of the applicable course fee.

Gift Shop Products

Sign With Sarah will endeavour to ensure you are happy with the product you have ordered, and that the personalisation process meets your requirements.  If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, please contact us within 14 days of the date of purchase to discuss options.

The majority of Sign With Sarah products are personalised and we do not start the production process until you have approved the design.  The design process can be quite time-consuming, and thus free cancellations are only available up until the point that designing commences.  Time is of the essense therefore, and you need to contact us immediately on 0413 498 952 (sms) or email [email protected] to cancel your order.

Once the design process has commenced, you may still be eligible for a refund, minus any costs incurred from the design process.  Unfortunately, once the production process has commenced, we are unable to accept returns or offer a refund except in the following circumstances:

  • The item is faulty or damaged (please take photos of the damage and send to [email protected]), or
  • The personalisation of the order has a spelling or design error that is the fault of Sign With Sarah.

If there is a mistake on a customer-approved design, we are unable to offer a refund or exchange, so please ensure you double check:

  • the spelling, punctuation, grammar, and details carefully, including names and dates if applicable,
  • the quality and resolution of any uploaded images,
  • the product type, size, and/or colour.

For non-personalised products, you are able to cancel your order if the items are yet to be shipped, and if the item is not as described or doesn’t meet the purpose it is intended for, we will gladly offer an exchange or a full refund, excluding postage and processing costs. 

All shipping charges for returning products to us must be paid by the returnee. We do not reimburse shipping charges. We highly recommend that you return your item(s) via registered or trackable post. Sign With Sarah cannot accept liability for items lost in postage/transit.

Auslan

Everyone learns at different rates, and learning a language when not immersed in it, can take considerable time. Within a few weeks, you will be able to introduce yourself and have basic conversations, but fluency often requires 2 years or more of full-time study and immersion.  Those with a natural propensity for languages may acquire it at a more rapid pace, but Auslan, like any other language, is not only about learning established lexicon, but understanding its grammar, syntax, and nuances. You can expect that as you progress throughout the Sign With Sarah levels, your knowledge and skills will develop and you will begin to interact with the Deaf community with increased confidence and competency. The degree to which you develop fluency however, depends heavily on the time available to you between classes to practice and consolidate your learning, on your exposure to the Deaf community, and your level of immersion.

Yes and no. Auslan is a language in its own right.  Like any other spoken language, sign languages have their own grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and nuances.  The degree of difficulty of learning, really depends on several things.

    1. Your goal for learning and degree of proficiency required. If your goal is to interact on a basic level with Deaf people you encounter occasionally, then learning some individual signs and developing conversational proficiency may be relatively easy. However, if your goal is to learn Auslan for professional or technical purposes, it can be more challenging, as it requires you to transition from thinking in English to thinking in Auslan and pulling together several complex skills to communicate both accurately and dynamically.
    2. Some individuals have a natural propensity for learning signed languages and pick it up more rapidly than others. If you do NOT fall into this category, don’t be discouraged as everyone learns at their own speed.  Be patient and keep practicing.  As they say, repetition is the mother of all learning!
    3. The more exposure you have to the signing Deaf community, and the more you are able to engage with others on a one-on-one basis, the more intuitive you will become to the nuances of Auslan. Those who have signing Deaf people in their sphere of communications, will grasp the expansive range of expression and improve their fluency more rapidly.  Learning a language in isolation without immersion is always more difficult, but I will endeavour to support you to interact with the Deaf community as much as you are keen and available to do so.
    4. Learning any language after a certain age is often more challenging than doing so when you are young, and it may therefore affect the rate at which you retain new signs and gain fluency in Auslan. However, just take it one step at a time and don’t be discouraged.  Like any new skill, the more you practice the more competent you’ll become.

Sign Languages are not universal. Auslan is the official sign language used in Australia.  While it is distinctly different from ASL (American Sign Language), it does bear some similarities to BSL (British Sign Language) and NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language).  We look at this in more depth in the first week of Level 1.

Key Word Sign (KWS) utilises signs and gestures to support language development and communication of those with learning disabilities, intellectual impairments, or limited communication ability. It incorporates signs from Auslan which sometimes undergo simplification and is utilised alongside speech.  Essentially, the whole sentence is spoken, while the key words are signed.  Auslan however is an entire language, with its own syntax and grammar which differs significantly to English, and thus cannot be spoken and signed simultaneously.  We look at this in more detail in the first week of Level 1.
