Online Auslan (Australian Sign Language) Classes

Prior to Covid-19, I was teaching Auslan classes in person and on campus at the Australian Catholic University.  In April 2020 classes were required to transition to online learning and I therefore needed to adapt my curriculum, teaching methods, and class activities/interactions to the virtual classroom.  Initially I was hesitant and unsure on how it would work, especially considering Auslan is a face-to-face contextual language and requires hands-on learning.  However, the transition went exceedingly well and rapidly became my preferred method of teaching.

With a little bit of thought and creativity, I have successfully adapted the curriculum for online implementation ensuring maximum engagement and interaction.  Unlike other online courses where you watch a video and are then required to practice independently, all Sign With Sarah classes are taught live and capped at 10 students to ensure plenty of opportunity for interaction, feedback, encouragement and correction of articulation of signs.

Teaching online has allowed me to increase the number of classes on offer and extend them to the broader community. As a mum of young children, I’m able to work from home and it therefore affords me greater flexibility and the capacity to offer classes of an evening.  As students, you are able to access class even when in lockdown or quarantine, and should you find yourself unable to attend a class, it will be recorded and uploaded to the server so you can access it and catch up prior to the next class.

Whether you have had absolutely zero exposure to sign language and the Deaf community or culture, are conversationally fluent but would like to improve specific skills (whether it be storytelling/role shifting, grammar, extending vocabulary etc), or fall somewhere in between, there are classes suitable for you.

If you are interested in having specific training for your workplace or school, please contact me to discuss further.

A Little About Me

Hi, I’m Sarah and I’ll be your Auslan teacher.  I have been signing since I was 2 years old and wear hearing aids, but have also developed clear speech although rely heavily on lipreading.  I live in both the Deaf and hearing worlds, being bilingual and bicultural.  14 years ago, I decided I wanted to learn more about my beautiful language, it’s etymology, syntax, history, etc, so I enrolled full time studying the linguistics of signed languages and Auslan.

I also studied education and social work at SCU (Sunshine Coast University) with the support of amazing interpreters.  I love languages and am passionate about teaching Auslan and Deaf culture, and supporting students to learn in engaging, fun, and creative ways.

I have been teaching and tutoring in varying capacities for 17 years and for the past few years have been teaching Auslan at ACU (Australian Catholic University) and for Language Tree, as well as providing private classes.

I have 2 beautiful children; love crafting, escape rooms, and playing board games; love netball and used to play for DNQ (Deaf Netball Queensland); and am heavily involved in my local church where we have a thriving Deaf ministry.
